Sydney : Do together

Sydney Harbour is often seen as the stunning focal point that defines this beautiful city. Framed by a dramatic cityscape and surrounded by sandstone cliffs, coves and numerous beaches it is certainly the most beautiful harbour in the world.

No trip to Sydney is complete without a cruise on the harbour, a visual feast of beaches, parks, sandstone caves, sea craft, historic homes and harbour islands. Made only more memorable by the iconic presence of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Subject of thousands of postcards and t-shirts, image on millions of happy snaps, the Sydney Opera House is Australia's most recognizable icon. Finished in 1973, it now has an impressive yearly program of up to 3000 contemporary and classical performances and is a truly memorable place for theatre, opera and ballet, in one of the most magnificent city settings of anywhere in the world. Guided Tours operate daily between 9am and 4pm and take up to one hour.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is still recognized as the old 'coat hanger' and has many a story to tell, including the notorious painting job of Paul Hogan, a.k.a Crocodile Dundee. More accessible than ever it is possible to have a memorable, if not sensational, Bridge Climb.

Just 10 minutes monorail ride from the city centre, Darling Harbour is one big showcase of fun and entertainment primarily set up for the enjoyment of visitors to Sydney. Once a thriving dockland, its decline resulted in its reinvention as the dazzling Darling Harbour. It was redeveloped in 1988 to coincide with the 200th anniversary of European settlement of Australia and began with the construction of a large exhibition and conference centre, which has been complemented with the addition of shops, restaurants and other attractions.

Whatever your taste there is is plenty to see and do in this beautiful city.

Fraumünster

The Fraumunster Cathedral is about two hundred yards across the river from Grossmunster. Following the same stairs down, across the river through one of the many bridges we were in front of the main gate of this smallish church which was undergoing repairs and maintenance with scaffolding all along its outer walls. This church has a slender blue spire and is designed in a more orthodox manner. It is small in size but is richly ornamented and adorned with paintings, frescoes and stained glass windows, some of those have been executed by Marc Chagall .The site of the Cathedral was originally a Benedictine abbey established in 853 AD which was later converted into a Royal Cathedral in the 14th century. The chief attraction of this church are five stained glass windows, each with it's own thematic colour scheme, designed by Chagall in 1970. They are best viewed in the morning when the sun light pierces these windows, producing a brilliant spectacle. These glass windows are adorned with Chagall's famous trade mark 'doves" reflected in each of the windows designed by him. This church was built for the private use of the Royalty and the Nobility, whereas the larger Grossmunster was for the general public. Close by is the old St. Peter's Church built in the 15th century. It boasts of the largest clock face in Europe. The diameter of the clock is 28 sq.ft while the minute hand is 12 feet long.

Zurich Art Gallery

This is the city's most important art gallery, boasting a collection of paintings and sculptures by Swiss and international masters, covering most periods from medieval times but predominately from the 19th and 20th centuries. Two of Monet's Water Lilies paintings and the largest collection of Eduard Munch's works outside Norway can be found here. There are also good collections of photography, the Dadaists and Alberto Giacometti, as well as an important library. Tours are available in English if reserved beforehand.

Swiss National Museum

TThe Swiss National Museum lies on a landscaped triangle between the Hauptbahnhof and the Limmat and Sihl rivers, and has fulfilled the role of the 'nation's attic' for over a century. Special exhibits in this castle-like museum supplement the permanent display of items related to Switzerland and Swiss culture. These include not only paintings and sculpture but also weapons, flags, watches, clocks, tools, toys and prehistoric objects.

Street Parade

Guess you shoulded expect, but in Zurich you can find The Isar Street Parade. on the 7th of August it will be the 13th time Zurich organises the Street Parade. Colorful floats, loud house and techno music, and a sea of dancers characterize this demonstration for love and peace. Celebrations before and after the parade turn Zurich into Europe's party mecca for a weekend.

Techno and house music have millions of fans in Switzerland and Germany, where you're far more likely to hear the driving electronic beat of synthesized music than alphorns or oompah bands--unless you're at Oktoberfest or a nightclub that offers tourist shows. Street Parade: an event that turns Switzerland's largest city into "the capital of the techno world." The parade, which features dozens of floats called "Love Mobiles," is meant to be "a demonstration in support of love, peace, and tolerance" to the beat of house and techno. It even has a broadcasting station, Radio Street Parade, which operates around the clock Mhz during the week leading up to the festivities. And when the parade is over, dozens of house and techno parties take place in and around Zürich, ranging from large festival-style events to underground raves for the cognoscenti.
